Introduction to Varicose Veins and High Blood Pressure

When patients are experiencing high blood pressure, it can be difficult to discern the root causes. One of the common inquiries centers around varicose veins. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most frequently asked questions in this regard so that patients are able to separate fact from fiction.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are typically not just a cosmetic concern, they can also cause discomfort. They are twisted and enlarged veins, usually found in the legs. Any veins that are located close to the surface of the skin could become varicose.

What do varicose veins include? Understand the symptoms of varicose veins, different types, causes, and more with our helpful blog post and video on varicose veins. It may involve several factors such as family history, hormone levels, and high blood pressure to develop varicose veins. Don’t let these blood clots last long term and become complications of varicose veins.

Do Varicose Veins Cause High Blood Pressure?

Varicose veins are caused by high blood pressure, or hypertension, within a particular vein. The bulging that occurs will take place once a valve inside of the vein has broken.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are a very common condition. They are caused by damaged or weak vein valves or walls. One-way valves exist inside each vein. They open and close, which keeps blood flowing toward the heart. Once the veins or walls have become weakened or damaged, the blood can begin to pool or flow backward. If blood pressure increases within the veins, varicose veins are a common result.

Varicose Veins and Blood Pressure Types

Varicose Veins and Venous Hypertension

Varicose veins and venous hypertension are closely associated, as the signs and symptoms can be caused by this form of hypertension. When varicose veins are caused by venous hypertension, this is due to structural or functional abnormalities taking place within the veins. Common symptoms include burning sensations, itching, heaviness, aching, cramping, swelling, dilatation, skin changes and prominent superficial veins.

Varicose Veins and Hypotension

While varicose veins are usually associated with high blood pressure, varicose veins and hypotension are linked with the exact opposite issue. Varicose veins are known to contribute to orthostatic hypotension, as blood pressure will decrease when the patient goes from laying down to standing up.

Risk Factors of Varicose Veins and High Blood Pressure

There are certain risk factors that can affect the patient, outside of the usual issues that are associated with genetic inheritance. Patients who are older and/or overweight have an increased risk factor, as well as female patients. Inactivity, leg injuries, smoking and oral contraceptives can also cause issues in these instances.

Varicose Veins Causing Other Health Risks

The other health risks that are caused by varicose veins are rare but patients should maintain a high level of awareness regardless. Ulcers, blood clots and/or bleeding may take place. Ulcers are particularly common near the ankles. The skin in the area will typically become discolored before the ulcer has a chance to form. Blood clots occur when the deepest veins within the leg start to enlarge. From there, swelling and leg pain are typical symptoms. Bleeding occurs when the veins closest to the skin have burst.

Treatment for High Blood Pressure Caused by Varicose Veins

The medical treatment that is offered to the patient will depend on their age, symptoms, personal preferences, expectations and tolerance for various medicines. Leg elevation, compression stockings, vein stripping surgery, lasers, salt/chemical solutions and smaller incisions are a few of the options available.
