Varicose Veins and Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

by | Jul 29, 2023

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted, and possibly painful veins that commonly occur in the legs. As a potential treatment option, radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat to close off these problematic veins, providing patients with relief from discomfort and improving the overall appearance of their legs.

Radiofrequency Endovenous Ablation (RFA) as a Varicose Veins Treatment Option

As bodies age and change over time, certain conditions may develop that leave people feeling self-conscious. One of those conditions is varicose veins which are veins that bulge from the skin and are lumpy or snake-like in appearance. It is assessed that nearly 33% of the general population aged between 18 and 64 have varicose veins. While they affect certain demographics more than others, it is a common condition that is usually harmless. Fortunately, Supreme Vascular and Interventional Clinic is equipped with the technology to treat varicose veins using radiofrequency ablation.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins typically occur in the leg area due to the pressure that’s put on them while standing and walking. When the valves in veins become weakened or damaged, they stop moving blood in the right direction. This blood then pools up and causes the vein to swell which gives it that unsightly appearance.

They pose no urgent medical risk, however, it’s a good idea to monitor them and be mindful if they grow or become painful. Some varicose veins could lead to ulcers, dermatitis, or even blood clots. If these symptoms do occur, seeking guidance from a vascular disorder specialist is encouraged.

It may involve several factors such as family history, hormone levels, and high blood pressure to develop varicose veins. Don’t let these blood clots last long term and become complications of varicose veins.

Minimally Invasive Procedures

Advancements in technology have made it possible to treat conditions such as varicose veins using local anesthetic. After these treatments, patients usually continue the rest of their day with ease. Types of minimally invasive procedures include:

  • Phlebectomy: If the veins are close enough to the surface, this method will use a small scalpel to make incisions in your leg and remove the varicose vein. A local anesthetic is used and stiches are rarely required.
  • Sclerotherapy: This procedure involves injecting a chemical into the veins that causes them to shrink, dissolve, and reroute the blood to healthier veins.
  • Endovenous laser: For this procedure, a medical professional will make a small incision in your leg. They will then take a catheter and guide it to the vein through this incision. Another tool entailing a laser will be used to generate heat and destroy the vein’s wall. Once this process is complete, the blood will reroute into healthier veins.
  • Radiofrequency Endovenous Ablation: Similar to the endovenous laser, this procedure uses targeted (laser) electrical energy to close the veins.
  • Other lifestyle modifications: Exercising, eating nutritious foods, and maintaining a healthy weight are all changes that can be made to prevent and reduce the appearance of varicose veins.

Radiofrequency Endovenous Ablation (RFA) for Varicose Veins

A doctor may recommend radiofrequency ablation for varicose veins when the patient experiences persistent symptoms such as pain, swelling, or discomfort in the affected leg veins. Additionally, if you have large, damaged, or inflamed veins, the doctor may suggest radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as a more effective and minimally invasive treatment option.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a fast and safe procedure requiring little downtime. First, the doctor will make a small incision near where the varicose vein is typically around the knee. Using ultrasound technology to help guide them, they will then thread a catheter into the vein and with the help of electrodes send radiofrequency heat to the damaged vein. This causes the vein to deteriorate, forcing the blood to redirect into other healthier veins.

To prepare, your doctor will evaluate your medical history and affected area. They will also ask if you are taking any medications, are pregnant, breastfeeding, drink alcohol regularly, and are allergic to anything. On the day of the procedure, you will be dressed in a medical gown and local anesthesia will be administered.

This is an outpatient procedure that provides a rather quick recovery. Medical professionals will apply some pressure and then a bandage. Most patients don’t need stitches. Your doctor will instruct you to wear compression socks, elevate your legs when sitting still, and avoid strenuous activity for a week or so. Complications are rare but may include infection, nerve damage, blood clots, and bleeding. If this happens, contact your doctor immediately.

Benefits of Using Radiofrequency Endovenous Ablation

  • You can return home after the procedure and walk without pain.
  • Most of the veins treated become invisible after procedure
  • Minimal bruising and swelling.
  • Requires little or no local anesthesia or hospitalization.
  • Procedure has a 98% success rate in the treatment of varicose veins
  • Same day admission and discharge
