Varicocele is a vascular disorder affecting veins of the scrotum. It is abnormal collection of tangled veins in the scrotum above the testicles. This is due to engorgement of veins in the scrotum due to weak valves preventing normal venous blood to flow out.

Introduction to Varicose Veins Scrotum Treatment Options

Seeking effective varicose veins scrotum treatment can help to improve your quality of life. While varicoceles are not usually dangerous, they may cause scrotal discomfort, fertility problems and reduced testosterone production by the testis.

At Supreme Vascular and Interventional Clinic, we provide quality varicocele treatment in Singapore. In this blog post, we take a look at the condition, its causes, the associated symptoms and the available treatment options. Here’s what to know.

What is Varicocele?

Simply put, a varicocele is an abnormal dilation and enlargement of the veins within the scrotum, the skin-covered sac that holds and helps to protect the testicles. This disorder is very similar to varicose veins in the legs. The condition is common in adults but can develop in teens during puberty.

A varicocele will usually show up above one of the testicles, oftentimes the left one. Generally, varicoceles will cause no problems and are harmless. However, some people experience scrotum veins pain and shrinking testicles.

Varicocele Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of varicoceles remains unclear. However, when the one-way valves in certain veins become defective, blood flow may become sluggish and blood could pool in the veins. Over time, this will cause the veins to enlarge, resulting in primary varicocele. In rare cases, swollen lymph nodes or other abnormal masses behind the stomach can obstruct blood flow, leading to secondary varicocele.

In teen boys, the condition often occurs due to the rapid growth associated with puberty. During this period, the testicles require more blood than normal, and any small problem can prevent blood from getting where it is needed.

Risk Factors

There are no clear risk factors for developing a varicocele. However, being overweight is associated with an increased risk of the condition.

Age and Prevalence

Varicoceles can affect anyone with testicles at any age. The condition is rare in children but becomes more frequent as puberty begins and has an overall prevalence of 15 percent.

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment option for varicose veins and spider veins.

Impact on Male Fertility

A varicocele is a common cause of male infertility. Blocked and enlarged veins around the testes can increase testicular temperature, something that can lead to low sperm production, reduced sperm motility and decreased sperm quality. However, not all varicoceles cause infertility. Around 10 to 20 percent of men diagnosed with a varicocele have problems fathering a child.

Varicocele Symptoms

Most males with a varicocele have no symptoms. As such, many people are not aware that they have the condition. When they occur, varicocele symptoms may include:

  • A swelling or bulge in the testicles or scrotum
  • Enlarged or twisted veins in the scrotum
  • A dull, recurring pain or discomfort in the scrotum
  • A small lump above the affected testicle
  • The affected testicle may be noticeably smaller than the other one
  • Possible problems with fertility

If you notice any of the above symptoms, consider visiting a varicocele specialist, Dr. Manish Taneja, in Singapore for accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.

Varicocele Diagnosis

Varicoceles are often detected through self-exam or during a routine physical exam. In addition to asking questions about your symptoms and reviewing your medical history, below are a few ways your doctor may diagnose the condition.

Physical exam

Varicoceles can be diagnosed by visual inspection and touching the scrotum. While you are standing, your doctor will ask you to take a deep breath, hold it and bear down as they examine your scrotum, a technique called Valsalva maneuver.

Imaging test

If a physical examination is not enough to be sure, the doctor may use imaging tests for diagnostics. In that case, you may need to obtain an ultrasound. This can include:

Varicose veins scrotum ultrasound: A varicocele ultrasound will provide an accurate and detailed picture of your veins and testicles.

Doppler ultrasound: This test produces images of how blood is flowing through your veins.

Depending on the information the ultrasound reveals, your doctor may order other tests such as semen analysis and a blood test to help confirm the diagnosis.

Varicocele Treatment

Mostly, varicoceles are not treated. However, treatment may be necessary in case of pain, fertility problems and abnormal semen analysis. Varicose veins scrotum treatment options include:

Surgical interventions: Varicocele surgery typically involves sealing off the enlarged vein and redirecting blood flow toward healthy veins.

Varicocelectomy: For a severe varicocele that affects fertility, this type of scrotum veins surgery can be used to remove the affected vein.

Varicocele embolization: This minimally invasive procedure diverts blood away from the affected vein in your scrotum. It is performed on a day surgery basis, making it a good option when seeking varicocele treatment.

When it comes to treating varicoceles, minimally invasive procedures offer several notable advantages. The procedures are associated with less pain, higher accuracy rate, less scarring, shorter hospital stay and minimal chance of recurrence.
