In Singapore, there are many advanced thyroid nodule treatment options, which are  comprehensive and tailored to each patient’s needs. Surgery can be recommended for nodules that are suspicious for malignancy. Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive treatment option using targeted heat to shrink the nodule. For asymptomatic nodules or those with low suspicion of malignancy, careful monitoring with regular follow-ups by thyroid specialists ensures timely intervention.

An Introduction to Thyroid Nodules Treatment Options

When you notice a thyroid nodule on your neck, it can be stressful – you might not know what to do first. For those with thyroid nodules, know that it’s crucial to visit a professional who specializes in thyroid nodules treatment options as soon as possible. Although thyroid nodules are noncancerous more often than not, you still need to take action by using one of the three main treatment options for thyroid nodules: surgery, ablation, and monitoring. Let’s talk more about thyroid nodules and treatment options here.

Understanding Thyroid Nodules

Thyroid nodules are lumps that collect on your thyroid gland. These lumps are usually comprised of noncancerous cells, as 90% of thyroid nodules are noncancerous in adults. In terms of symptoms, when you have very severe thyroid nodules, you might experience the following:

  • Difficulties breathing or swallowing.
  • A change in your voice/chronic hoarseness.
  • Neck pain (usually in the front of your neck).
  • Abnormally large thyroid gland.

Those symptoms are rare, but still possible in severe cases. Typically, if you have thyroid nodules, you will experience more mild symptoms due to hyperthyroidism (the condition that occurs when your thyroids are overproducing hormones). Here are some symptoms to look out for:

  • Heart palpitations or increased heartrate.
  • Shakiness.
  • Weight loss.
  • Extreme hunger.
  • Very regular diarrhea or bowel movements.
  • Issues sleeping.
  • Missed menstrual periods.
  • Abnormally large thyroid gland.

After you notice one or more of these symptoms, you need to visit a thyroid nodules specialist. A specialist will use a diagnostic method (like a physical exam, ultrasound, biopsy, thyroid functioning test, and more) to determine what to do with your case of thyroid nodules.

The Main Thyroid Nodules Treatment Options

Surgical Intervention

After you complete the diagnostic process, the thyroid professional you visit might determine that you need a surgical intervention to deal with your nodules. In this case, you’ll likely undergo a thyroidectomy.

This procedure will remove some of (or all of) your thyroid gland. As you might expect, a surgical intervention is serious, so you’ll only have to undergo this procedure if you are suspected to have thyroid cancer, have extreme symptoms due to your nodules (like shortness of breath or trouble swallowing), or if your hyperthyroidism is not under control with other treatment options.

The risks of undergoing a surgical intervention include blood clots, scar tissue that causes complications, esophagus injury, changes in voice, and more. The benefits that come with undergoing a surgical intervention include the removal of any cancerous tumor, getting your hyperthyroidism under control, and more.

Ablation Techniques

If you aren’t recommended to get a thyroidectomy, you might need to get an ablation done on your thyroid nodules. One of the most common ablation techniques is radiofrequency ablation. To complete the entire procedure, the treatment takes about 45 minutes to one hour after that timeframe, the cells within the nodule die. Thyroid nodules radiofrequency ablation boasts several advantages.

  1. It is done as day surgery procedure under light sedation.
  2. It takes about 45 minutes to one hour to complete the entire procedure.
  3. Patients are discharged the same day.
  4. Normal thyroid tissue adjacent to the nodule is preserved.
  5. It does not affect thyroid function.
  6. Multiple nodules can be treated at same time.
  7. The treated nodules do not regrow again.\
  8. No surgical scar with needle mark on the skin.
  9. Quick recovery and back to full activity and normal lifestyle.
  10. The technique is suitable to treat even large thyroid nodules.

Before you get an ablation treatment done, know that there are some risks involved such as bleeding, numbness, infection, and bruising. The benefits usually outweigh these risks, though. After getting an ablation treatment, patients usually have a healthy thyroid and a short recovery time.

Active Monitoring Approach

If your doctor suspects that your thyroid nodules are relatively noninvasive, then they’ll likely suggest the active monitoring approach to you. This simply means that you’ll both be carefully watching your nodules, to ensure that they don’t change or cause you more discomfort in the future. Patients will usually receive an ultrasound or something similar every few months to observe their nodules.

Decision-Making Process

When you have thyroid nodules, it’s incredibly important that you get individualized treatment. Things like age, family history, symptoms, and other factors will determine which treatment plan you and your doctor chooses. As a patient, you have the right to have input in your treatment plan, so what treatment plan you choose has to do with your preferences and your doctor’s professional opinion.

Post-Treatment Care and Follow-Up

After your treatment is completed, you have to give yourself adequate time to recover. In addition, you should be prepared for complications to arise, however uncommon they are. Adhere to your monitoring schedule, if you’re a patient who is undergoing active surveillance. Finally, no matter what treatment option you undergo, you’ll need to schedule follow-up appointments.
