- Ultrasound: This test uses sound waves to create images of the thyroid gland and any nodules present. Ultrasound is a noninvasive way to evaluate the size, shape, and structure of nodules.
- Fine Needle Biopsy: If ultrasound reveals suspicious nodules, a fine needle biopsy may be performed. Using ultrasound as a guide, a very thin needle is inserted into the nodule to extract cells for examination under a microscope. This test determines if a nodule is benign or cancerous.
- Thyroid Scan: This imaging test uses small amounts of radioactive iodine and a special camera to take pictures of the thyroid gland. It shows how well the thyroid is taking up and using iodine, helping diagnose conditions like hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
