Understanding Varicose Veins

Explore our specialized guides answering common questions on prevalence, potential complications, and treatment options in Singapore.

Common Questions
What causes varicose veins, and can they be prevented?
Varicose veins develop when internal vein valves weaken, allowing blood to pool in the legs. Common factors include age, genetics, pregnancy, and prolonged sitting or standing. While genetic risk cannot be changed, walking regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and elevating your legs can help slow progression.
How are varicose veins diagnosed?
Diagnosis is performed using a painless Doppler Ultrasound scan. This maps out blood flow, identifies malfunctioning valves below the skin surface, and helps formulate an accurate, tailored treatment plan.
Are minimally invasive treatments less painful than traditional surgery?
Yes. Treatments such as Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) and sclerotherapy are performed under local anesthesia in a day-surgery setting. They cause minimal discomfort, leave virtually no scarring, and allow patients to return to normal activities quickly.
What is the recovery time after a venous procedure?
Most patients walk out of the clinic immediately after the procedure and resume light daily activities the same day. Heavy weightlifting or swimming should generally be avoided for about a week.
Will insurance or Medisave cover varicose vein treatments?
When varicose veins cause medical symptoms such as pain, swelling, heaviness, or skin discoloration, treatments are generally eligible for Integrated Shield Plan claims and Medisave coverage in Singapore.
