VenaSeal™ in Singapore

Minimally Invasive Laser Treatment for Varicose Veins

VenaSeal™ is a minimally invasive treatment for selected varicose veins caused by faulty veins and venous reflux.

Unlike treatments that use heat, such as endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA), VenaSeal uses a specialised medical adhesive to close the affected vein.

A thin catheter is guided into the faulty vein under ultrasound guidance. Small amounts of medical adhesive are then delivered along the vein to seal it. Once the vein is closed, blood is redirected through healthier veins.

At the Supreme Vascular and Interventional Clinic, varicose vein treatment is led by Dr. Manish Taneja, a dual-trained neurointerventional and peripheral vascular intervention specialist.

With expertise spanning the brain and body, Supreme provides specialist-led vascular assessment, minimally invasive treatment and a continuum of care under one roof.

What Is VenaSeal™?

VenaSeal™ is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a medical adhesive to close a faulty vein responsible for venous reflux and selected varicose veins.

Normally, valves inside the leg veins help blood move upwards towards the heart. When these valves become weakened or damaged, blood can flow backwards and pool within the veins.

This abnormal backward flow is known as venous reflux. Over time, venous reflux can contribute to enlarged, twisted varicose veins and symptoms such as leg aching, heaviness and swelling.

VenaSeal treats the underlying faulty vein by sealing it from inside. The body then gradually absorbs the treated vein, while blood is redirected through healthier veins.

How Does VenaSeal™ Work?

Closing the Faulty Vein Without Heat

Before treatment, ultrasound is used to assess the veins and identify the source of venous reflux. A thin catheter is inserted into the affected vein through a small access point.

The catheter is guided along the vein using ultrasound imaging. Small amounts of medical adhesive are delivered through the catheter at planned points along the vein.

Gentle pressure is applied to help the vein walls come together and seal. The catheter is removed once the planned treatment has been completed. Blood then continues to circulate through healthier veins.

Key Difference: VenaSeal use a medical adhesive and radiofrequency ablation uses radiofrequency energy while treatments such as EVLA uses laser energy to close the faulty vein.

When Might VenaSeal™ Be Recommended?

VenaSeal may be considered when ultrasound confirms that a faulty superficial vein is contributing to varicose veins or venous reflux.

Your specialist will consider:

  • Your symptoms
  • The extent of your varicose veins
  • Ultrasound findings
  • The pattern of venous reflux
  • The anatomy of the affected vein
  • Your medical history
  • Previous vein treatments
  • Your treatment goals
  • Whether VenaSeal or another treatment is more appropriate

Not every patient with varicose veins requires treatment, and VenaSeal is not suitable for every vein.

A specialist assessment and ultrasound evaluation are important before selecting the treatment approach.

Potential Benefits of VenaSeal™

Minimally Invasive Treatment Without Thermal Energy

For appropriately selected patients, VenaSeal may offer several potential benefits.

Minimally Invasive

The procedure is performed through a small catheter entry point rather than surgical removal of the vein.

Uses Medical Adhesive

VenaSeal closes the faulty vein using medical adhesive rather than laser or radiofrequency heat.

No Thermal Energy

Unlike EVLA and radiofrequency ablation, VenaSeal does not use heat to close the treated vein.

Ultrasound Guided

Ultrasound allows the specialist to identify the affected vein and guide treatment accurately.

Targets the Underlying Reflux

Closing a refluxing vein may help reduce symptoms associated with venous insufficiency.

Can Form Part of a Broader Treatment Plan

Additional treatments may sometimes be considered for remaining varicose veins depending on the patient's venous anatomy.

Important reminder: VenaSeal is not automatically the best treatment for every patient. The appropriate approach depends on your ultrasound findings, vein anatomy, symptoms and individual treatment goals.

VenaSeal™ vs EVLA vs Radiofrequency Ablation

Understanding the Different Varicose Vein Treatments

VenaSeal, endovenous laser ablation and radiofrequency ablation can all be used to close selected faulty veins, but they use different technologies.

TreatmentHow the Vein Is ClosedUses Heat?
VenaSeal™Medical adhesiveNo
EVLALaser energyYes
Radiofrequency AblationRadiofrequency energyYes

The choice between treatments depends on the patient's venous anatomy, ultrasound findings, symptoms, medical history and treatment preferences. There is no single treatment that is appropriate for every patient with varicose veins.

VenaSeal™ vs Foam Sclerotherapy

VenaSeal and foam sclerotherapy are both minimally invasive treatments used for selected venous conditions, but they work differently. VenaSeal uses medical adhesive to close a targeted vein. Foam sclerotherapy involves injecting a specialised solution into a vein to cause it to close.

The appropriate treatment depends on the size, location and function of the affected vein and the overall pattern of venous reflux. In some patients, different treatments may be combined as part of an individualised treatment plan.

What Are the Potential Risks and Limitations?

Understanding the Risks of VenaSeal™

VenaSeal is minimally invasive, but like any medical procedure it carries potential risks.

Potential risks may include:

  • Bruising
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Inflammation around the treated vein
  • Skin irritation
  • Changes in sensation
  • Allergic or inflammatory reaction
  • Recurrence or development of new varicose veins
  • Need for additional treatment

Your individual risks depend on your vein anatomy, medical history and the treatment performed.

Your specialist will discuss the potential benefits, risks and alternatives before recommending VenaSeal.

Recovery After VenaSeal™

What Can You Expect After Treatment?

Recovery following VenaSeal varies between patients. The VenaSeal treatment itself is quick, with the injection and sealing process usually lasting between 15 and 45 minutes depending on how many veins need to be treated. Recovery is fast and straightforward, allowing you to walk right out of the clinic and get back to light daily activities immediately. Most patients are comfortable returning to work within 1 to 2 days.

Your specialist may recommend:

  • Walking regularly after treatment
  • Avoiding prolonged periods of sitting or standing
  • Following access-site care instructions
  • Taking medication when required
  • Wearing compression if recommended
  • Gradually returning to normal activities
  • Attending follow-up appointments

Some patients may experience temporary bruising, tenderness or tightness along the treated vein. Follow-up ultrasound may be recommended to assess the treated vein and surrounding circulation. One advantage of VenaSeal over thermal treatments like RFA is that it generally does not require wearing compression stockings during recovery.

Your specialist will provide personalised recovery instructions based on your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About VenaSeal™

What is VenaSeal used for?

VenaSeal is used to treat selected varicose veins associated with an underlying faulty or refluxing vein.

How does VenaSeal work?

A thin catheter delivers small amounts of medical adhesive into the affected vein, causing the vein to seal and allowing blood to redirect through healthier veins.

Does VenaSeal use heat?

No. VenaSeal uses medical adhesive rather than thermal energy. This differs from EVLA and radiofrequency ablation, which use heat to close the vein.

Is VenaSeal minimally invasive?

Yes. VenaSeal is performed through a small catheter entry point rather than traditional surgical removal of the vein.

Is VenaSeal suitable for everyone with varicose veins?

Suitability depends on the patient's symptoms, ultrasound findings, vein anatomy and overall treatment needs.

What is the difference between VenaSeal and EVLA?

VenaSeal uses medical adhesive to close the vein, while EVLA uses laser energy to heat and close the vein.

What is the difference between EVLA and radiofrequency ablation?

Both treatments use heat to close a faulty vein. EVLA uses laser energy, while radiofrequency ablation uses radiofrequency energy.

What is the difference between VenaSeal and radiofrequency ablation?

VenaSeal uses medical adhesive, while radiofrequency ablation uses controlled radiofrequency heat to close the affected vein.

Can VenaSeal be combined with other varicose vein treatments?

Yes. Depending on the patient's vein anatomy, additional treatments such as foam sclerotherapy or ambulatory phlebectomy may be considered.

How long does VenaSeal treatment take?

Treatment duration varies depending on the number and complexity of the veins being treated.

Because VenaSeal uses a fast-acting medical glue to close diseased veins without heat, its procedure time and recovery timeline are slightly faster than thermal methods like RFA (Radiofrequency Ablation).

The injection process typically takes 15 to 45 minutes depending on the length and number of veins being treated. Patients can plan for roughly 60 to 90 minutes total to allow for preparation, ultrasound mapping, and brief post-procedure observation.

What happens after VenaSeal?

Patients receive personalised aftercare instructions and may be advised to walk regularly and attend follow-up assessment or ultrasound when required. Patients can walk out of the clinic on same-day discharge and return to light, daily activities immediately after the appointment. Many can return to work within 1 to 2 days.

Can varicose veins return after VenaSeal?

New varicose veins can develop over time, and venous reflux can affect other veins. Follow-up and ongoing management may therefore be recommended.
