The Importance of Benign Thyroid Nodule Follow-Up Process and Care
At Supreme Vascular and Interventional Clinic in Singapore, a specialized thyroid nodules clinic in Singapore, Dr. Manish Taneja prioritizes your thyroid health with a compassionate follow-up program to monitor benign nodules and reduce the risk of complications. Regular check-ups are crucial for early detection of any changes.

Introduction to Thyroid Nodules and our Specialized Thyroid Nodules Clinic in Singapore
Thyroid nodules are unusual lumps or growths that develop within the thyroid glands. They are more common in adults, affecting about 30% of the population. In most cases, thyroid nodules have no symptoms and about 95% of all diagnosed cases are noncancerous. While most thyroid nodules are benign, meaning they pose no risk of severe infections or cancer, about 5% of the cases may lead to complications if not well managed.
At Supreme Vascular and Interventional Clinic, we understand your concerns about the risks of complications or developing malignant thyroid nodules. That's why we have developed a compassionate, but professional follow-up program to monitor the nodules and reduce the risk of complications. Contact us to schedule an appointment, or read on to learn more about benign thyroid nodules and the importance of a follow-up process and care.
Understanding Benign Thyroid Nodules
Benign thyroid nodules are unusual lumps within the thyroid glands. The lumps are either solid or fluid-filled cell overgrowths. Some lumps are small and noncancerous, while others may enlarge and cause complications. In most cases, they affect female adults, although they may develop in anyone, including children.
There are different types of benign thyroid nodules, which include;
- Colloid nodules: These are the most common nodules and may appear in solitary (one nodule) or multiple nodules.
- Thyroid cysts: A thyroid cyst nodule may be wholly or partly fluid-filled. These types of nodules are low risk but require close monitoring if they become larger than 2 centimeters.
- Inflammatory nodules: These are thyroid nodules caused by chronic swelling of the thyroid. They can be painful or painless.
- Hyper-functioning thyroid nodules: These types of nodules cause the thyroid to become reactive, leading to hyperthyroidism.
- Multinodular goiter: These types of benign thyroid nodules enlarge the thyroid gland.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
In most cases, benign thyroid nodules do not cause symptoms. However, you may experience the following symptoms when they enlarge and become symptomatic.
- Pain or bleeding from the nodule
- Swallowing or breathing difficulties
- Throatiness or voice changes
- Hyperthyroidism
- Unintended weight loss or gain
- Muscle weakness
- Heat intolerance
Since most thyroid nodules are asymptomatic, it may take time to discover them. However, you may discover the nodules when they enlarge, and you begin to feel or see them. Your thyroid nodule specialist may discover them during a physical examination for other conditions.
At Supreme Vascular and Interventional Clinic, we apply advanced diagnostic methods to evaluate the nodules. We use physical examination, thyroid function test, ultrasound, fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA), and other diagnostic methods to evaluate nodules.
An ultrasound evaluates the size of the nodule and whether it is solid or fluid-filled. We also use ultrasound imaging to assess whether the nodules are solitary or multiple. Fine needle aspiration biopsy helps us evaluate whether the nodules are benign or cancerous.
Importance of Follow-Up for Benign Thyroid Nodules
While most thyroid nodules pose no serious risk, the possibility of causing complications or becoming cancerous necessitates close monitoring. Follow-ups after a diagnosis evaluate how the nodule behaves, including whether it enlarges or becomes inflammatory over time. It also helps to detect malignancy for early treatment.
Guidelines for Follow-Up
An initial diagnosis describes the size and shape of the nodules. It also assesses the possibility of malignancy. Results from the initial assessment help us develop a follow-up plan.
Follow-Up Rules
Follow-up protocols outline the evaluations required to monitor the nodules for malignancy or other complications. It begins with the initial follow-up, scheduled depending on the size of the nodule. Nodules smaller than 10 mm may require no further evaluation. However, we schedule an initial follow-up after 6 or 18 months for nodules greater than 10 mm. The initial follow-up mostly uses ultrasound imaging, but it can also use FNA.
During the follow-up visits, ultrasound imaging helps us evaluate changes in the nodule shape and size. Our thyroid nodule specialist in Singapore, Dr. Manish Taneja, also examines the symptoms to assess the risk of complications.
When to Consider Further Action
He may recommend further action if the imaging results and evaluations show a change in nodule shape and size or additional symptoms. Depending on the thyroid nodules treatment options and your condition, radiofrequency ablation is a popular minimally invasive treatment for benign thyroid nodules removal and takes about 30 - 45 minutes.

The Advantages of RFA of Thyroid Nodules
The major advantages of the technique are as below.
- It is done as day surgery procedure under light sedation.
- It takes about 45 minutes to one hour to complete the entire procedure.
- Patients are discharged the same day.
- Normal thyroid tissue adjacent to the nodule is preserved.
- It does not affect thyroid function.
- Multiple nodules can be treated at same time.
- The treated nodules do not regrow again.
- No surgical scar with needle mark on the skin.
- Quick recovery and back to full activity and normal lifestyle.
- The technique is suitable to treat even large thyroid nodules.

How to Keep Thyroid Healthy for Optimal Well-Being
As part of the endocrine system, the thyroid hormones must be perfectly balanced at all times for the body to function normally.
Caring For Your Thyroid Health
Have you ever experienced difficulty swallowing or breathing? You may have risk factors including a family history of thyroid nodules or iodine deficiency. Thyroid nodules are abnormal lumps (growths) within the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland located below your voice box. Even if most thyroid nodules are benign, 10-15% of nodules are cancerous. Sometimes overgrowth of normal thyroid tissue can lead to hyperthyroidism. In other cases, multiple nodules can form in the thyroid called multinodular goiter. Fluid filled thyroid cysts can be one type of thyroid nodule within the thyroid. More complex nodules may lead to thyroid cancers. Depending on the root cause and type of nodule you have, patients can monitor with regular ultrasound or even have a thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAC) if required. Surgery to remove partial or whole thyroid gland can be done but thanks to minimally invasive treatments such as Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), this procedure can treat noncancerous and cancerous thyroid lumps.
