Over the years, research and organizations have discovered that there is a connection between osteoporosis and thyroid dysfunction in some patients. What has been found, according to the British Thyroid Foundation, is that an increased thyroid hormone can increase the rate of bone loss for those who are suffering from osteoporosis. Understanding these two disorders and how they are related is important so you can begin managing and treating them properly.

Overview of Osteoporosis

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with osteoporosis, this means that they have a bone disease in which their bone mass and density start to decrease. When this happens, they are at higher risk for fractures and breaks when they fall or have an accident.

Osteoporosis can affect people of all ages, but it's most commonly associated with middle-aged to older men and women. According to a 2021 study, women in Singapore over the age of 50 have a one-in-three chance of developing osteoporosis. In many cases, this disease is more likely to affect women, and some teenagers will also start to see signs of a juvenile version of osteoporosis.

Understanding Thyroid Dysfunction

Those diagnosed with thyroid dysfunction are not properly producing thyroid hormones needed for daily function, and it could be that they aren't making enough or too much thyroid. In Singapore, approximately 545,000 patients have thyroid nodules impacting their thyroid function. The thyroid's central purpose is to manage the metabolism, so when it's not working correctly, it can affect everything in the endocrine system.

The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland in the neck just below the voice box. Thyroid gland produces hormone that is required for our metabolism with under or over hormone secretion both causing physical problems.

Thyroid nodules are abnormal lumps (growths) within the thyroid gland. This is a very common condition seen in approximately 30% of adults. These are more commonly seen in females. There can be single or multiple thyroid nodules.

How Thyroid Dysfunction Affects Bone Health

If you have thyroid dysfunction, your bone health is likely affected. The thyroid hormone is vital for bone health, ensuring that the development of the skeletal system develops properly and maintains that structure. If there isn't enough thyroid being generated or too much in production, the bone mass will be affected the same way, with too little or too much. When the bone mass isn't produced properly, this allows it to become vulnerable, and for those who also have osteoporosis, it increases the risk of fractures and breaks.

Diagnostic Approaches

If you believe that you or someone you care for is suffering from a combination of thyroid dysfunction and osteoporosis, some approaches can be taken to determine if that is the case.

Thyroid Testing

The first step is to have a full thyroid panel of lab work to test the hormone production levels. Before a healthcare provider can relate the two, they need to see exactly how the thyroid works and whether it's underperforming or overperforming.

Bone Density Measurement

Before osteoporosis can be diagnosed, a bone density test is performed to see if there is a decrease in the mass through a dual-energy x-ray (DXA). To get the most accurate readings, bone density will be checked at the spine and hip, which can help determine your fracture risk with the disease. In some cases, bone density will also be tested at the heel and wrist level if a mobile test needs to be done. After the bone density is tested, it is compared to other individuals your age and gender who do not have osteoporosis, and see where you fall on the scale.

Managing Thyroid Dysfunction and Osteoporosis

For those diagnosed with both osteoporosis and thyroid dysfunction, there are ways to manage these diseases so that they do not get worse and have a reduced impact on each other. The first step is to start getting more low-impact exercise that is low risk for fractural damage. The best management is to start walking regularly and get your body systems working together in unison.

Any medication that you've been prescribed for either osteoporosis or thyroid dysfunction should be taken regularly so that you can keep either disorder from getting worse. You'll have to learn how to live with these disorders, but managing them from the beginning will improve your life quality and reduce your risk of fractures.

Lifestyle Modifications and Dietary Recommendations

Suppose you are partaking in lifestyles that are harmful, such as smoking or excessive alcohol use. In that case, you'll need to modify your lifestyle to reduce these activities until you can eliminate them. Also, if you partake in other hobbies that are strenuous and dangerous for your bones, you'll need to cut back on those and find things that are less stressful for your bone mass.

In addition to eating a healthy diet of fruits, grains, vegetables, and lean meats, you'll need some new dietary supplements. Adding calcium and vitamin D to your diet will help improve your overall bone mass and work to prevent future fractures.

Preventative Strategies

You can do some things to prevent yourself from getting thyroid dysfunction, osteoporosis, or both, and you can improve both of these areas.

Exercise Regularly

No matter your age, you'll need to start exercising regularly. Start walking a few times weekly to get your body moving and your systems working properly. As your energy and endurance build, you can add to this.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

When you eat whole foods and lots of fresh vegetables, you maintain the vitamins your body needs. Your bones and thyroid need regular calcium, vitamin D, and other nutrients to perform at their best. Read our informative blog post on our guide to eating healthy for thyroid nodules.

Stop Smoking

If you've started a habit of smoking, it's time to quit, as nicotine has a way of breaking down bone mass. This can increase your chances of osteoporosis, especially if there is a history of it developing in your family.

Thyroid Nodule Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) Treatment

Radiofrequency ablation aims to give patients a non-surgical option for treating thyroid nodules. This procedure is a minimally invasive option that a surgeon can perform, should the preliminary tests determine that you would benefit from it.

The Advantages of RFA of Thyroid Nodules

The major advantages of the technique are as below.

  1. It is done as day surgery procedure under light sedation.
  2. It takes about 45 minutes to one hour to complete the entire procedure.
  3. Patients are discharged the same day.
  4. Normal thyroid tissue adjacent to the nodule is preserved.
  5. It does not affect thyroid function.
  6. Multiple nodules can be treated at same time.
  7. The treated nodules do not regrow again.
  8. No surgical scar with needle mark on the skin.
  9. Quick recovery and back to full activity and normal lifestyle.
  10. The technique is suitable to treat even large thyroid nodules.

Find out how thyroid nodule Radiofrequency Ablation can help you in a minimally invasive way on our blog post, “Thyroid Nodule Radiofrequency Ablation Treatment: Diagnosis,  Management, and Recovery.”

How to Keep Thyroid Healthy for Optimal Well-Being

As part of the endocrine system, the thyroid hormones must be perfectly balanced at all times for the body to function normally.

Caring For Your Thyroid Health

Have you ever experienced difficulty swallowing or breathing? You may have risk factors including a family history of thyroid nodules or iodine deficiency. Thyroid nodules are abnormal lumps (growths) within the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland located below your voice box. Even if most thyroid nodules are benign, 10-15% of nodules are cancerous. Sometimes overgrowth of normal thyroid tissue can lead to hyperthyroidism. In other cases, multiple nodules can form in the thyroid called multinodular goiter. Fluid filled thyroid cysts can be one type of thyroid nodule within the thyroid. More complex nodules may lead to thyroid cancers. Depending on the root cause and type of nodule you have, patients can monitor with regular ultrasound or even have a thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAC) if required. Surgery to remove partial or whole thyroid gland can be done but thanks to minimally invasive treatments such as Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), this procedure can treat noncancerous and cancerous thyroid lumps.
