Carotid Stenting to Prevent Stroke

Carotid artery disease occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the brain become narrowed or blocked, often due to plaque buildup. Blocked arteries can significantly increase the risk of strokes. Carotid stenting is a minimally invasive procedure that involves placing a small metal coil into the clogged artery to prop it open and decrease the chance that it narrows again. Widening the narrowed artery helps restore blood flow to the brain. This procedure is used as stroke treatment or as a preventative measure to reduce the risk of stroke.

Recovery in the Hospital

Immediate Post-Procedure Monitoring

After the procedure, patients are monitored closely, and most stay for 24 to 48 hours in the hospital. Vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, and neurological indicators are assessed to ensure stability.

Pain Management

Patients might experience mild discomfort at the catheter insertion site, typically in the groin area where the femoral artery is. Pain management medications are typically provided to alleviate any discomfort and reduce inflammation.

First Few Hours

Movement is restricted immediately after the procedure to allow the artery site to heal properly, prevent bleeding, and that your vital signs are all healthy. Monitoring may include ultrasound or CT scans to ensure the stent is functioning correctly and that your artery is clear. Blood thinners are prescribedto avoid clot formation.

Nighttime Care

During the night, continued monitoring helps ensure a smooth recovery, with staff available to address concerns. If there are no problems, you can be dismissed within 24 hours.

Recovery at Home

Home Care Guidelines

Rest is essential during the initial recovery period, typically lasting 1-2 weeks. Your doctor will give you specific instructions for managing pain, monitoring symptoms, taking medication, and returning to normal activities. It is advisable to avoid strenuous activities for a few days.

Managing Symptoms

You can typically manage mild side effects such as bruising, soreness, and headaches with over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol). It's important to recognize warning signs of complications:

  • excessive swelling
  • sudden weakness
  • losing consciousness
  • shortness of breath
  • nausea or vomiting
  • vision changes
  • sudden problems with balance or walking
  • other signs of heart attack or stroke

Contact your doctor with questions, or call 9-5-5 immediately for urgent medical attention.

Gradual Return to Activities

Patients can usually resume light activities, such as walking, within a few days. However, it's advisable to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for at least 5-7 days or as directed by your doctor and wait until the incision site is healed. It will take two to three weeks to return to your regular routine.

Do's and Don'ts During Recovery

Do's:

  • Medication: Follow medication instructions to relieve pain and prevent blood clots.
  • Follow-Ups: Attend all follow-up appointments for monitoring and check-ups.
  • Clean the Site: Keep the insertion site clean and dry; change bandages as instructed.
  • Diet: Drink plenty of fluids and eat a heart-healthy diet; talk to your doctor or a dietician if you have specific concerns or need help changing your diet

Don'ts:

  • Don't ignore the insertion site: avoid letting the insertion site become damp.
  • Don't overexert: refrain from exerting too much physical effort; don't engage in intense physical activities until cleared by your doctor
  • Don't smoke: avoid smoking and alcohol, which can impede recovery and increase stroke risk.
  • Don't ignore unusual symptoms: monitor symptoms and contact your healthcare team if you have chest pain, vision changes, or other problematic signs.

Factors That Can Alter Recovery Time

Unclean Site

Keeping the site clean is crucial to prevent infection. Following your doctor's instructions for bandaging and cleaning the site is essential.

Physical Exertion

Strain can impact healing. Follow your doctor's advice on slowly returning to daily activities, and listen to your body. Short walks are recommended to keep your heart (cardiovascular system) healthy.

Recovery is only one part of managing carotid artery disease. Understanding why carotid stenting was recommended, when treatment is necessary, and how specialists determine the most appropriate approach can help you make informed decisions about your long-term care. Understanding and Treating Mini-Strokes (TIAs)

Although TIAs may seem minor and symptoms often disappear within minutes, they serve as a serious warning that a major stroke could follow.

Stroke In Younger Adults: What You Need to Know

You are never too young to have a stroke. As such, it is important to know what to look out for and how your lifestyle increases your risk of having a stroke.

We've Got You Covered for Specialized Stroke Screening, Prevention, and Management

Imagine heart attacks where the blood flow to your heart is blocked. Similarly, a stroke occurs when the blood flow to your brain is interrupted becoming a "brain attack". When blood supply does not reach a certain part, brain cells begin to die. Different types of stroke include ischemic strokes (blockage of blood vessel due to blood clot) or a mini stroke, a TIA (transient ischemic attack), with no permanent damage yet serious. Stroke also occurs when a blood vessel in the brain pops causing bleeding in the brain.

Certain areas of the brain can be affected by stroke and some symptoms of a stroke including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and high blood sugar levels increase the risk of stroke whereas an active lifestyle or controlling high cholesterol reduces the risk. How well do you know stroke? Find tips to prevent and manage stroke, the differences in stroke screening tests, and the newer technology and treatments available. Brain Aneurysm Resources

Explore our brain aneurysm resources. Understanding a brain aneurysm often involves learning across several areas.

Put Brain Aneurysm on Your Health Radar

Did you experience the worst headache of your life? Thoughts could be racing through your mind. A brain aneurysm is a weak spot in a blood vessel in the brain that can change over time. The key concern is when an aneurysm ruptures, which can disrupt blood flow, affect brain tissue, and lead to serious brain damage. Controllable conditions like high blood pressure can increase this risk and treatment options can depend on the condition. Surgical clipping is one option that prevents blood from entering the weakened area. In many cases, minimally invasive treatments can also be used to restore normal blood flow and reduce risk. We have created structured guides to help you explore each stage in more detail:

A simple (computed tomography) CT scan could be just what the doctor ordered and the first step in early detection and prevention of a brain aneurysm. Come in for an easy consultation with our brain aneurysm specialist in Singapore to be on your health radar.
