What is a Thyroid Nodule?
Explore benign thyroid nodules through clear, detailed visuals - see what they look like, how they're diagnosed, and how modern treatments like radiofrequency ablation are changing the way we manage this common thyroid condition.

Types of Thyroid Nodules
Benign thyroid nodules are extremely common, affecting about one-third of the population. Most of these nodules are non-functioning and benign, meaning they do not produce excess hormones or cause thyroid dysfunction. As a result, thyroid function remains normal in the majority of patients with these nodules.

Benign Thyroid Nodule
.A thyroid nodule can be either healthy (benign) or unhealthy (potentially problematic), so accurate evaluation is important. Thyroid function tests help assess whether the thyroid gland is producing hormones normally, indicating if the nodule is affecting overall thyroid function. An ultrasound scan of the thyroid gland provides detailed images, allowing doctors to examine the size, shape, and characteristics of the nodule, helping to distinguish benign nodules from those that may require further investigation or treatment. Together, these tests form the foundation for effective diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules. The majority of benign thyroid nodules can continue to grow and multiple nodules in both lobes are common, which can cause pressure symptoms.

Thyroid Nodules Ultrasound Scan
A thyroid ultrasound is the primary imaging test used in the initial detection and evaluation of thyroid nodules. Besides being a safe, painless, noninvasive imaging technique, a thyroid ultrasound provides highly accurate images of your thyroid gland, allowing your doctor to determine the size, shape, vascularity, and internal structure of the nodules.

Ultrasound Thyroid Nodules Classification
Ultrasound and Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) can help classify nodules into categories. This process involves identifying worrying nodules with features that suggest a higher likelihood of cancer, indeterminate nodules that may require closer monitoring, and likely benign nodules that typically do not necessitate invasive procedures. Understanding these classifications helps ensure accurate diagnosis and personalized care for each patient.

FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology) Thyroid Nodule
Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) is a common and minimally invasive procedure used to evaluate thyroid nodules. It is usually performed in a clinic setting and is most effective when guided by ultrasound, which helps the doctor precisely target the nodule for sampling. Special fine needles are used to collect small tissue samples from the nodule, which are then examined under a microscope to determine whether the nodule is benign or malignant. This technique is safe, quick, and essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Thyroid Nodules Treatment Options
Management of thyroid nodules depends on their type, size, and behavior over time. Many benign, non-functioning nodules can be safely monitored through regular clinical check-ups and serial ultrasound scans to track any changes. In cases where nodules grow, cause symptoms, or raise concern, treatment options may include surgical removal through conventional or minimally invasive approaches. Functioning (overactive) nodules may be treated with radioiodine to reduce hormone production. Newer interventional techniques, such as radiofrequency ablation, offer a non-surgical alternative for selected patients, providing effective nodule reduction with minimal downtime.

Caring For Your Thyroid Health
Have you ever experienced difficulty swallowing or breathing? You may have risk factors including a family history of thyroid nodules or iodine deficiency. Thyroid nodules are abnormal lumps (growths) within the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland located below your voice box. Even if most thyroid nodules are benign, 10-15% of nodules are cancerous. Sometimes overgrowth of normal thyroid tissue can lead to hyperthyroidism. In other cases, multiple nodules can form in the thyroid called multinodular goiter. Fluid filled thyroid cysts can be one type of thyroid nodule within the thyroid. More complex nodules may lead to thyroid cancers.
Depending on the root cause and type of nodule you have, patients can monitor with regular ultrasound or even have a thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAC) if required. Surgery to remove partial or whole thyroid gland can be done but thanks to minimally invasive treatments such as Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), this procedure can treat noncancerous and cancerous thyroid lumps.
