If your thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism), your system slows down, causing things like depression and weight gain. If it is overactive (hyperthyroidism), your system speeds up, causing symptoms such as weight loss and difficulty sleeping.

Treating thyroid problems typically requires medication (and in some cases surgery) to either increase or decrease thyroid hormone levels. However, some natural remedies can help improve thyroid health and work with traditional treatment to reduce symptoms further.

Here are some of the best natural remedies and lifestyle changes you can try.

Iodine-Rich Foods

Your thyroid requires iodine to function correctly. Iodine is not made by the body, so you have to ingest it. If you have an underactive thyroid, you should increase your consumption of iodine-rich foods, including seaweed, fish, dairy, eggs, beef liver, and chicken. Choose iodized table salt.

If, however, you have an overactive thyroid, you should reduce your consumption of those iodine-rich foods and choose table salt that is not fortified with iodine. Check other fortified food too. You don’t have to cut them out, just not eat too much of them. Talk to your doctor.

Selenium-Rich Foods

Selenium is also used by your thyroid. Your thyroid gland contains the highest levels of selenium in your body. Consider eating more of these selenium-rich foods: Brazil nuts, fin fish, shellfish, beef, turkey, chicken, whole-wheat bread, beans, and lentils. Selenium is also typically found in fortified cereals and may be found in other fortified foods. Brazil nuts are the best source of selenium.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D supplementation has been shown to improve thyroid function in hypothyroid patients. Getting enough vitamin D also helps your general health. One of the best ways is to spend more time outside! Using sunscreen, which helps protect your skin, does not reduce the amount of vitamin D your body produces. Just 15 to 20 minutes outside a day optimizes vitamin D production. If you are still deficient, you can take a supplement.


Your gut affects everything in your body. On top of that, it’s common for some thyroid diseases and some gut diseases to coexist specifically, autoimmune thyroid disease often coexists with gluten sensitivity. Supporting your gut can help support your thyroid. One way to do this is by taking probiotics, which contain live microorganisms that are helpful to your body. Active yogurt is a good way to get probiotics, but you can also take a supplement. Talk to your doctor before taking probiotics if you have a compromised immune system…they can be dangerous and cause runaway infections if your immune system is not healthy.

Coconut Oil

While coconut oil can’t “cure hypothyroidism,” it has anti-inflammatory properties that may help your body’s overall health. It also helps a slow metabolism, and thus can reduce the weight gain associated with hypothyroidism. It also helps lower your cholesterol.

Use only one or two tablespoons of coconut oil a day. It works well on popcorn, to coat meat before rubbing, or for stir frying. You can also substitute it for butter. Don’t overdo it, though, it’s quite fatty.

Avoid Goitrogenic Foods

Some foods disrupt the production of thyroid hormones. They’re called “goitrogens” because they increase your risk of goiter (thyroid enlargement). Reduce your consumption of cruciferous vegetables, sweet potato, sorghum, linseed, cassava, lima beans, soy, and millet. Watch for soy, which can be hidden in a lot of processed foods.

Exercise Regularly

Exercise positively impacts the symptoms of both hypo- and hyperthyroid conditions. If you aren’t used to exercise (or if thyroid symptoms are making it hard to get started) try walking, water aerobics, yoga, tai chi, or strength training. Yoga and tai chi are both shown to also reduce strength and improve mood.

Try to exercise most days in any given week. Another way to get more active, depending on where you live, is to leave the car parked and run errands on foot or by bike.

Sleep Well

Thyroid dysfunction can cause sleep problems. Practice good sleep hygiene, such as going to bed at the same time every day and keeping your bedroom cool, and make sure to allocate enough time to sleep. You may find you need to spend longer in bed if you have issues falling asleep.

Stress Management

Last but not least, do your best to reduce stress. Yoga and tai chi, already mentioned, can give you the benefits of exercise and stress reduction. Meditation can help too if you aren’t sure where to start there are phone apps that provide guided meditation. Make time for hobbies, family, and friends. Keep alcohol consumption reasonable (don’t drown your sorrows). If necessary, there is nothing wrong with receiving therapy or professional help with stress management.
