Mapping the Deep Venous System: A Closer Look at Your Right-Leg Veins
Learn about the key components of the deep venous system and superficial veins in the right leg. This comprehensive article from our specialized varicose veins clinic in Singapore, the Supreme Vascular and Interventional Clinic in Singapore explains how these veins work together to return blood to the heart and how their dysfunction can lead to conditions like varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis.

Mapping the Deep Venous System: A Closer Look at Your Right-Leg Veins
When you experience symptoms like leg swelling, heaviness, or varicose veins, the root of the issue often lies deep beneath the surface. Your venous system is a complex network of vessels responsible for returning deoxygenated blood from your lower limbs back to your heart. At Supreme Vascular and Interventional Clinic, we help patients in Singapore understand and manage conditions involving the deep and superficial veins of the legs.
In this post, we walk you through the key veins on the right side of your body - from the abdomen down to the ankle - so you can better understand how your blood circulates and where issues may arise.
Inferior Vena Cava (IVC)
The inferior vena cava (IVC) is the main highway for venous return from the lower body. It collects blood from both legs, the pelvis, and abdominal organs, and channels it directly into the heart.
It is formed by the right and left common iliac veins and is located to the right of the spine. The IVC also receives blood from other major veins such as the renal and hepatic veins.

Right Renal Vein
The right renal vein drains blood from the right kidney into the inferior vena cava. It also receives smaller tributaries such as the right adrenal and gonadal veins. It plays an essential role in returning filtered blood from the kidney back to the systemic circulation.
Right Common Iliac Vein
This vein forms from the joining of the right external and internal iliac veins. It contributes to the formation of the IVC and drains blood from the pelvis and the lower limb.
Right External Iliac Vein
The right external iliac vein is a continuation of the femoral vein. It travels through the pelvis to join the internal iliac vein and form the common iliac vein. It carries blood from the leg and lower abdominal wall toward the heart.
Right Common Femoral Vein
Located just below the groin crease, this is a major vein that receives blood from both the superficial and deep venous systems of the leg. It also receives the great saphenous vein at the saphenofemoral junction before continuing upward as the external iliac vein.
Saphenofemoral Junction
This is the point where the great saphenous vein, a major superficial vein, drains into the common femoral vein. It is a common site of venous reflux, which can lead to varicose veins and other symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency.
Profunda Femoris Vein (Deep Femoral Vein)
Also known as the deep femoral vein, this vessel drains blood from the deep tissues of the thigh and empties into the common femoral vein. It plays a key role in deep circulation and can sometimes be involved in deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Right Superficial Femoral Vein
Despite its name, the superficial femoral vein is actually part of the deep venous system. It runs alongside the femoral artery, drains the thigh and lower leg, and eventually joins the popliteal vein. It is a common site for deep vein thrombosis.
Saphenopopliteal Junction
This is the anatomical point where the small saphenous vein (superficial) drains into the popliteal vein (deep) behind the knee. Valve incompetence at this junction can result in varicose veins, particularly in the calf or lower leg.
Popliteal Vein
Located behind the knee, the popliteal vein receives blood from the small saphenous vein, anterior and posterior tibial veins, and the peroneal vein. It continues upward as the superficial femoral vein. This vein is also a common location for DVT.
Gastrocnemius Vein System
These veins drain the gastrocnemius muscle, one of the main calf muscles, into the popliteal vein. They are part of the muscle pump system that aids in venous return during walking or standing. Thrombosis in this system may be a source of lower-limb DVT.
Soleal Veins and Sinuses
Located deep within the soleus muscle in the calf, these veins act as blood reservoirs and contribute to venous return when the muscle contracts. They connect with the posterior tibial and peroneal veins and are significant because blood can stagnate here, increasing the risk of clot formation.
Anterior Tibial Veins
These paired veins run along the front of the lower leg and drain blood from the shin and top of the foot. They join the posterior tibial and peroneal veins to form the popliteal vein.
Peroneal Veins
These paired veins run along the outer part of the lower leg and drain blood from the lateral and posterior compartments of the leg. They merge with the posterior tibial veins and empty into the popliteal vein.
Posterior Tibial Veins
These veins run along the back of the lower leg, collecting blood from the foot and calf muscles, including the soleal sinuses. They are key conduits in returning blood from the lower extremities to the heart.
Why This Anatomy Matters for Vein Health
At our speicalized varicose veins and vascular clinic in Singapore, the Supreme Vascular and Interventional Clinic, we use our understanding of this venous anatomy to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, including chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, and deep vein thrombosis. Through advanced imaging such as duplex ultrasound and venography, Dr. Manish Taneja locates the exact point of dysfunction, whether it’s a faulty valve at the saphenofemoral junction or stagnation in the soleal sinuses.
We offer minimally invasive treatments tailored to your needs, restoring normal blood flow and improving your quality of life.

Am I at Risk of Varicose Veins, Spider Veins, or Deep Vein Thrombosis?
The appearance of varicose and spider veins on your body is nothing of immediate concern. If there are symptoms associated with them, schedule a visit with your doctor to diagnose and treat varicose veins. Spider veins, varicose veins, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can occur on individuals with all body types, genders, and ages. The following demographics may have a higher chance of experiencing them.
- Those who are overweight (therefore, maintain a healthy weight to reduce the pressure)
- Pregnant women
- Females
- Individuals between the ages of 40 and 80
- Those who are inactive/not exercising (even sitting or standing for long periods)
- Smoker
- Frequent flyers
- Those who have had surgery or leg trauma
Varicose veins specialist, Dr. Manish Taneja, offers comprehensive care for varicose veins patients at Supreme Vascular and Interventional Clinic in Singapore.
Assessment of Varicose Veins
Clinical examination and ultrasound doppler scan are most important tools in assessment and deciding management of varicose veins. This takes about 15-20 minutes to do and is usually done in the clinic itself.
Treatment of Varicose Veins
There are various techniques available to treat varicose veins depending on clinical presentation. These include:
- Conservative medical management including compression socks
- Laser endovenous treatment (EVLT)
- Radio-frequency endovenous ablation (RFA)
- Clarivein endovenous treatment
- VenaSeal endovenous closure system
- Microwave endovenous ablation
- Open surgery
- Venous avulsions
- Sclerotherapy
- Cryolaser and cryosclerotherapy
What are the Advantages of Minimally Invasive Treatments?
- No major surgery
- No or minimal visible scars
- Quick recovery
- Same day admission and discharge
- Clinic based treatments
