Understanding Brain Aneurysms

Many brain aneurysms are small and inconsequential. However, diagnosis is important while recognizing the possible growth rate and risks. A brain aneurysm is a bulge or ballooning of a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain. A small brain aneurysm measures approximately 5 mm. Where a brain aneurysm is located, and its type can help determine its diagnosis and treatment.

The bulging or ballooning developing into a brain aneurysm occurs due to a weakness in the wall of a blood vessel. The most common form of brain aneurysm is a saccular aneurysm that appears rounded or berry-shaped on one side of a blood vessel wall.

There are other types including fusiform, which encompasses all sides of the wall of a blood vessel.

Factors Influencing Aneurysm Growth

While some small aneurysms remain stable or grow slowly, others may enlarge more rapidly. The location and shape of an aneurysm along with the overall health of an individual can influence growth. However, that growth cannot be projected.

With growth comes a higher risk of rupture which can be life threatening. Family history and hereditary factors play a key role. Additionally, health conditions and lifestyle choices such as hypertension, kidney disease, and smoking all play a role in brain aneurysm growth and the possibility of a rupture.

Typical Growth Rates of Brain Aneurysms

In general, smaller brain aneurysms grow more slowly than larger ones. A small brain aneurysm may sit for years with little to no growth.

While some studies show a common growth rate of up to three percent per year, one case study revealed a growth rate of 0.34 to 1.63 mm per year on three growth models of small brain aneurysms with a one percent rupture rate when an aneurysm reached 10 mm.

Monitoring Aneurysm Growth

If you have been diagnosed with a brain aneurysm, the frequency of routine imaging tests may vary depending on its location, shape, and size. Initial screening through a CT scan and/or an MRI will help determine if you have one. Further testing through an angiogram may be necessary to determine a smaller brain aneurysm's exact location and size. Care and monitoring should be done by a doctor who specializes in brain aneurysms who can accurately assess a brain aneurysm, its ongoing growth, and make appropriate treatment recommendations.

Signs of Growth and When to Seek Help

There are various symptoms that may point toward aneurysm growth. Some personality changes could include withdrawal, moodiness, depression, or aggression.

Other symptoms include:

  • Severe headaches with sudden onset
  • Changes in vision
  • Dizziness or a loss of balance
  • Confusion
  • Trouble speaking
  • Drowsiness or falling unconscious
  • Seizures

Any of these symptoms should be taken seriously with immediate medical intervention.  If someone experiences seizures or unconciousness, call 9-9-5.

Brain Aneurysm Treatment Options for Growing Aneurysms

The size, shape, and location of a brain aneurysm will dictate treatment options. A small brain aneurysm may only require routine monitoring. A larger aneurysm, or one experiencing rapid growth, will likely call for treatment comprised of endovascular coiling or surgical clipping. Dr. Manish Taneja, our brain aneurysm specialist in Singapore, can discuss treatment options with you while considering the nature of your aneurysm and your overall health.

Living with the Knowledge of Aneurysm Growth

It is important to note that the presence of a small brain aneurysm need not be the cause of ongoing fear or stress. Maintaining routine screenings will help determine possible growth patterns and treatment options. Developing a dedicated support system with family and friends, with routine visits to your health provider can help minimize your anxiety of a brain aneurysm diagnosis.

Put Brain Aneurysm on Your Health Radar

Did you experience the worst headache of your life? Thoughts could be racing through your mind. A brain aneurysm is a weak spot in a blood vessel in the brain that can change over time. The key concern is when an aneurysm ruptures, which can disrupt blood flow, affect brain tissue, and lead to serious brain damage. Controllable conditions like high blood pressure can increase this risk and treatment options can depend on the condition. Surgical clipping is one option that prevents blood from entering the weakened area. In many cases, minimally invasive treatments can also be used to restore normal blood flow and reduce risk. We have created structured guides to help you explore each stage in more detail:

A simple (computed tomography) CT scan could be just what the doctor ordered and the first step in early detection and prevention of a brain aneurysm. Come in for an easy consultation with our brain aneurysm specialist in Singapore to be on your health radar.
