Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is less common known cause of acute stroke in young patients.

Stroke is commonly caused by clots in arterial circulation supplying blood from heart to the brain that block blood supply with damage to the brain cells.

Cerebral Venous Thrombosis: Diagnosis, Management, and Treatments

Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis (also known as Cerebral Venous Thrombosis) is a serious condition that happens when there is a blood clot in the brain’s venous sinuses. When this happens, blood will not be able to drain from your brain, which can cause a hemorrhage. You need to be informed about Cerebral Venous Sinus because there are some tell-tale signs to look for, that could help you avoid further issues.

CVT can occur in any age group, but it is more commonly seen in young adults and women.

You might be thinking “Are there cerebral venous thrombosis specialists or a cerebral venous thrombosis doctor near me?” You might also be thinking “Is there a cerebral venous thrombosis clinic near me?” Good news, there is. Here’s what you need to know about Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis.

How Common is Cerebral Venous Thrombosis?

No, Cerebral Venous Thrombosis is not common. Who does cerebral venous thrombosis effect? Only about 5 in one million people have this condition, so if you have CVST, it’s incredibly rare. Cerebral venous thrombosis is more common in patients with underlying genetic clotting disorders and there’s a recent association with post covid infections.

Cerebral Venous Thrombosis Causes

Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis is a unique kind of stroke, that affects a small amount of people every year. Its causes are diverse.

The exact cause of CVT is often multifactorial, with several risk factors contributing to its development.

These may include genetic predisposition, certain medical conditions (such as thrombophilia), hormonal changes (such as pregnancy or the use of oral contraceptives), infections, head injuries, or the presence of a brain tumor.

Cerebral Venous Thrombosis Symptoms

There are many symptoms to watch out for, that might be a sign that you have CVST. They can vary depending on the affected veins and the extent of the clot. Here are some common signs and symptoms:

  • Headaches (often described as thunrderclap headache)
  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulty speaking or understanding speech
  • Fainting or loss of consciousness
  • Loss of control over movement in a certain part of the body
  • Weakness or paralysis of limbs
  • Seizures
  • Coma or changes in mental state

Some individuals may also experience symptoms related to increased intracranial pressure such as nausea, vomiting, and papilledema (swelling of the optic disc).

Clinical Presentation of Cerebral Venous Thrombosis

The way CVST presents varies. Over eighty percent of people with the condition experience headaches. Over forty percent of the people with the condition experience seizures, and about forty percent of the people with the condition experience hemiparesis (weakness in part of the body). Finally, about 15-20% of people with the condition have altered consciousness.

They can present with the following :

  • Severe headaches
  • Focal neurological deficits
  • Altered conscious state
  • Coma (depending on the location and extent of clot associated with brain damage)

Cerebral Venous Thrombosis Diagnosis and Management

To get diagnosed with CVST, you’re going to need to get various imaging studies done, to confirm you’re someone with the disease. Oftentimes, accurate MRIs or MRVs are performed. Diagnosis of CVT usually involves a combination of imaging studies, such as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, along with blood tests to evaluate clotting factors and rule out other potential causes.

Managing the disease depends on your specific case, so it’s always crucial to consult with a healthcare professional. Depending on your symptoms and case, you’ll be able to figure out a treatment plan that works for you.

Cerebral Venous Thrombosis Complications and Risk Factors

As with all things, you might experience complications if you have CVST. For example, it is possible to have impaired speech, long-term brain injuries, developmental issues, vision and mobility issues, and more, if you have CVST.

Certain risk factors heighten your chance of contracting CVST. For example, you’re more likely to get CVST if you have the following:

  • Anemia
  • Heart disease
  • Iron deficiency
  • Certain infections (head and neck region)
  • Head injury (impacting the venous structures)
  • Malignancies
  • Inflammatory diseases
  • Pregnancy and postpartum period
  • Oral contraceptives

Apart from your genetic predisposition and certain medical conditions (clotting disorders or autoimmune diseases), pregnancy and postpartum period are risk factors.

Your risk of contracting CVST gets higher if you’re pregnant, because many people with CVST contract the disease after giving birth. This is relevant, especially because many people with CVST are newborns, who contract the disease early on in life.

If you use oral contraceptives such as estrogen this can be a risk factor as well. More recently, there is a reported association with vaccination.

Cerebral Venous Thrombosis Treatments

The good news is, there are plenty of treatment options available for patients with CVST. There are neurointerventional treatments that can help people with CVST.

Treatment for CVT usually involves a combination of medications and, in some cases, procedures to remove or dissolve the clot. Anticoagulant medications, such as heparin and warfarin, are often prescribed to prevent the growth of the clot and promote its dissolution.

In more severe cases, endovascular procedures or surgery may be necessary to remove the clot or restore normal blood flow. These involve catherer based techniques to remove blood clots from the brain with severe life threatening clinical presentation and not responding to medical therapy.

What are Venous Diseases?

Venous diseases include varicose veins, spider veins, deep vein thrombosis, cerebral venous thrombosis, and leg swelling. Learn about the symptoms, diagnosis, and management options for each condition, including minimally-invasive treatments. Discover the advantages of non-surgical treatments such as quick recovery, same-day admission and discharge, and no or minimal visible scars. What are Varicose Veins?

Blood circulation to the legs involves two systems broadly. First is the arterial system taking blood to the legs from the heart carrying oxygenated blood. Second is the venous system taking deoxygenated blood from the legs to the heart. This venous system comprises two parts: superficial venous system under the skin and deep venous system next to the bones and the deep muscles. What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Deep vein thrombosis or DVT as it is commonly known a (DVT) is a condition in which blood clots form in the deep veins of the lower limbs. Uncommonly deep veins of the arm can also get affected but this is very rare and usually under special circumstances. Most patients with DVT are concerning requiring urgent treatment but not life-threatening. Learn more about the deep vein thrombosis treatments at our clinic.

What is Leg Swelling

Leg swelling is a very common condition affecting patients in all age groups. It can be acute or chronic condition affecting one or both legs. There are multiple causes of leg swelling with venous disorders being one of the relatively common cause of the condition. Other causes include medication, medical conditions, lymphatic disorders besides others.
